Beyond the Braille is an initiative that seeks to empower persons with visual impairment with computer skills. This initiative is to aid persons with visual impairment in school reduce their dependence on sighted students during studies and also overcome challenges that they encounter with the use if the braille. We believe the world outside school would not give the luxury of a transcriber to translate a brailed document to written mode of writing for a person who is a non-braille user should a person with a visual impairment get an opportunity to work at a public place where braille is not used after school.
At OFIE, we say that to empower persons with disabilities is to also help them acquire computer skills. Beyond the Braille is to help persons with visual impairment have a smooth academic journey and as well prepare them for life outside school by equipping them with relevant skills that would have bridge the gap of inequality.
Beyond the Braille is a partnered project between OFIE and Tech Era and operates under the mentorship of the Special Education Department of the University of Education, Winneba. Tech Era is an organization in Ghana that has researched into the needs of Persons with Disabilities and helps in solving the realized problems by giving access to assistive technology and creating a capacity building program that helps the PWDs access quality and inclusive education, giving them a fairer chance of gaining employment as well.
